If you’re a seasoned Latin American traveler you are probably already familiar with the Selina hotel chain.

But with over 100 worldwide locations to chose from how are you supposed to decide on which one to try out first.

Well at this point I’m 6 months in to nomading around latin america and I’ve visited 15+ Selina destinations and I want to share a few of my favourites with you.

Starting with the Selina in San Miguel de Allende, approx 3 hours north west of Mexico City.

First of all I have to say San Miguel de Allende in itself is probably the biggest hidden gem I found during my 2 month nomad stint travelling around Mexico. I didn’t know anything about it when I arrived and had done no research so really arrived without any expectations.

What I came to realise is that it is one of those places that has a very unique and special energy… I’m not often wowed by a place (I think that is one of the downsides to traveling so much new places often struggle to impress me) but San Miguel de Allende has a serious sparkle about it.

I can’t quite put my finger on why, but the only way to describe it was that it reminded me exactly of the town in the film Coco if you now you know it felt to me this town really captured the spirit and vibe of what we dream Mexico is going to be like based on movies.

The Town

The town itself is so picturesque and there are plenty of lovely little laptop friendly cafes to hop around, like Inside cafe, heaps of tavernas to try out all the local Mexican food and some beautiful surrounding attractions to take day trips to.

One of the day trips we did that I was particularly impressed by was to the Hacienda San Jose Lavista vineyard it literally felt like I was back in the prosecco valley in Veneto region of Italy.

The Stay

The Selina in San Miguel de Allende is definitely something to write home about, it’s by far the most aesthetically pleasing Selina hotel I have personally stayed in, it looks like something out of a fairy tale with all the rooms and common spaces being centrered around a large open foyer.

The quality of the rooms at this Selina hotel were way above the usual standard, but with no micros or dorms, all the standard and standard plus rooms were beautiful here, especially those that face the main street as they have cute little romeo and juliet style balconies.

The Co-Working

If you have to get shit done (as selina would say) they have a small Cowork that probably fits about 10-15 people. The main draw however is the rooftop area with incredible views of the surrounding area and a decent restaurant/bar which I believe often hosts many of their community events.

The Location

The thing I loved the most about this location was the wellness area with a view over the San Miguel De Allende main church – it was the perfect place to do yoga and the teacher that taught here during my stay (September 2024) was one of the best I’ve experienced.

The Downside

The downside to this location is that it is not included in the Selina colive packages, so the nightly price is a little bit higher, but honestly for a long weekend trip out of Mexico City it’s totally worth it.

If you’re planning your trip to Mexico right now, this is definitely my best suggestion of somewhere to considering mapping in to your route. This town is special and will allow you to experience the Mexico you see in the fairy tales.
